Capturing the authentic and wild kitchen garden

[Hamilton, ON, September 15, 2022]-Earls Court Gallery is excited to present “The Kitchen Garden” opening Thursday, October 20, 2022, showcasing new paintings by Hamilton artist James Gummerson.

In previous bodies of work, James Gummerson has explored the alleyways and common pedestrian walkways of Hamilton. “The Kitchen Garden” highlights the fruitful growth that happens in and amongst an urban and thriving city. Gummerson explains:

“Over the years I have spent a lot of time walking and looking for places I could go throughout the city to gain a quiet moment. When I went to places like the “Dundurn Kitchen garden”, I felt as though I had been transported out of the city. Many of the community gardens also became places of solitude and peace. But they are also a place of birth and atrophy. I went during different times of day and in different seasons and was struck by the constant change. These paintings express how I saw those "Kitchen gardens" and the oasis they became for me.”

Whether the kitchen garden is planted in sprawling backyards or wedged between concrete structures, its fruits are gleaned with moments of earthly connection. The importance of the kitchen garden and its effects on offering solitude is evidently highlighted in each of Gummerson’s paintings.
